The Approach

In November 2023, gravitational-wave detectors heard two black holes collide. One weighed a hundred suns. The other weighed a hundred and forty. What remains is a sphere the size of a small city, heavier than a star cluster. From here it is only a smudge of missing stars.

Light passing nearby is already bending. Watch the starfield slide.

The Disk

Captured matter spirals inward at half the speed of light, heated to millions of degrees by friction. One side of the disk races toward you. Relativistic beaming makes it burn brighter and bluer. The other side, receding, dims to ember.

This asymmetry is not artistic license. It is special relativity.

The Photon Ring

Close to the horizon, gravity is strong enough to bend light into closed orbits. The thin bright ring you see is starlight, and disk light, that has circled the black hole once, twice, forever.

This remnant turns at 84 percent of the hardest spin relativity permits, and a turning hole drags space around with it. Light thrown with the spin holds an orbit at 571 kilometres; light thrown against it cannot survive inside 1280. The shadow above you is the arithmetic of that difference: five percent narrower than it is tall, flattened along the limb rotating toward you, and sitting six hundred kilometres to the side of the mass casting it.

Time

Your seconds are stretching. For every heartbeat here, more than a heartbeat passes on Earth. Fall close enough and a minute of yours becomes their year. The universe is speeding up behind you.

Compare the clocks. They will never agree again.

The Horizon

There is no surface. No wall. Only a boundary in causality: the radius where every path forward points inward. The sky gathers itself into a shrinking circle above you.

Nothing that crosses returns. Not even light.
